Who Is Not Covered by Medicare?

People under age 65 who have not been enrolled in the Social Security disability program for 24 months, or who do not have end-stage renal disease (ESRD), Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), or certain disabilities. Medicare is a program for individuals and does not provide family insurance. It does not offer coverage for spouses or dependent children.

Illegal immigrants are not eligible for Medicare.

Legal immigrants ages 65 and older can buy into the Medicare program after they have been legal residents for five years.
