There are nine “hot spots” for Medicare fraud. A Medicare Fraud Strike Force Team has been assigned to each one of these areas. These are areas with unusual levels of fraudulent activities. Repeated patterns of abuse — such as phony claims, the sale of Medicare numbers, and the involvement of career criminals in Medicare fraud — have focused special attention on these areas by investigators and prosecutors:
1. South Florida/Miami–Dade County, considered Ground Zero for Medicare fraud (it became the first hot spot in 2007)
2. Los Angeles (2008)
3. Detroit (2009)
4. Houston (2009)
5. Brooklyn (2009)
6. Tampa Bay (2009)
7. Baton Rouge (2009)
8. Dallas (2011)
9. Chicago (2011)
