Hospice care was added to Medicare Hospital Insurance (Part A) in 1983. It is the only addition to Part A since Medicare was enacted in 1965. It is available to beneficiaries who have a terminal illness with six months or less to live. Beneficiaries who elect hospice care receive all their care for the terminal condition through the hospice, and are only responsible for 5 percent coinsurance on any drugs or respite care used.
