f someone is already receiving Social Security benefits, they will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Hospital Insurance (Part A) and Medicare Medical Insurance (Part B). Part A is free to most participants. People must pay a premium for Part B, so they have the option of turning it down. No action is needed to enroll: Three months before a person’s 65th birthday, the Medicare card will be received in the mail. If people are not already receiving Social Security benefits, they should contact the Social Security Administration approximately three months before their 65th birthday to sign up for Medicare. A person can enroll in Medicare by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY is 1-800-325-0778. People can also apply online for Medicare on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website.
