Pharmacy Audit, Transparency Bill Gets NCPA Endorsment

The National Community Pharmacists Association endorsed bipartisan legislation Monday that would change the relationship between pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and community pharmacists. The bill would establish standards for PBM pharmacy audits, among other things.

The State of Comparative Effectiveness Research and the Environment for Health Care Decision Making

The National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC) has released the results of its third annual survey of health care stakeholders' attitudes toward comparative effectiveness research (CER). The results show that 90 percent of stakeholders say CER is "somewhat" or "very important" to them, a drop from 95 percent a year earlier. Big Pharma Pockets $711 Billion in Profits by Price-Gouging Taxpayers and Seniors

Health Care for America Now says that drug companies have brought in $711 billion in profits, due, in part, to inflated prices in the Medicare Part D program. Health Care for America Now argues that the companies could afford to offer the federal government discount prices for drugs to low-income beneficiaries.

Colorado Hospitals Facing More Than $2 Billion in Medicare Cuts Over 10 Years
by Colorado Hospital Association
Starting April 1, 2013, Medicare provider reimbursements are cut by 2 percent. This process, known as sequestration, will hit providers who see Medicare beneficiaries, including doctors, hospitals and insurers. The White House estimated the cuts will reduce Medicare payments by $11 billion a year. The Colorado Hospital Association weighed in.

Health Care for America Now Calls Out Drug Industry Group for Using Bogus Signatures on Letter Opposing Medicare Drug-Price Negotiations

On March 18, the nonprofit advocacy group RetireSafe, partly funded by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers of America, sent a letter to Congress to argue against expanding Medicaid's drug rebate program to the Medicare low-income population. The letter, which included signatures from several consumer advocacy groups, featured 353 signatures. Several of the signatures turned out to be fraudulent.

Seniors Speak Out Against Medicare Advantage Cuts in AHIP’s New TV Ad

America's Health Insurance Plan (AHIP) has launched an ad campaign opposing a proposed 2.2 percent cut in Medicare Advantage payments in 2014. The most recent TV ad from AHIP features Medicare Advantage beneficiaries voicing concerns about consequences the pay cuts could have for them, such as losing access to their plans.

Pharmacists Protest Audits, Exclusive Plans, Auto-Shipping
by National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA)
The National Community Pharmacists Association has urged CMS to act on several issues as the agency determines 2014 requirements for Medicare drug plans. The NCPA complaints included egregious pharmacy audits, exclusionary preferred pharmacy plans and wasteful auto-shipping.
